the traffic circle/round-about was part of a "pilot study program" by the city of phoenix to mitigate traffic on "collector streets" Council member Doug Lingner designated this location to receive the Circle for District 7. It was a cutting edge experience to have Streets Transportation look at anything other than the "this is what we have to offer" circle. Some of us had grander visions, some even grandiose. Even to the point of imagining the installation. Here is some of the fun that the neighborhood had being involved in attempting to change the city policy of not including "Art in the traffic circles" of phoenix. The summer of 2006 saw the installation of Coronado Pipes, a demonstration project that clearly showed that art (if that is what you could call it) can be installed and provide a sense of place for the neighborhood. Thanks to the personal intervention of Ross Blakely, Director of Streets Transportation, and Barbara Stocklin, Director of historic Preservation, Coronado is now home to one of the best looking traffic Circles that Phoenix can offer.
first we installed them........ MISSION IMPOSSIBLE
AND IN THE MEAN TIME WE WERE GETTING IN TROUBLE WITH THE CITY AND DEMONSTRATING THAT IDENTIFING ART CAN EXIST IN A TRAFFIC CIRLCE THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC HELPED US RAISE OUR VOICES A LITTLE CHECK IT OUT HERE.....
